Having trouble toning and getting energy

by Alison
(United States)

I am 5'2 and I weigh 116 lbs. I am not looking to lose a bunch of weight. My main goal is to get toned and stop looking so flabby, but I am having a hard time finding the right way to get there. I usually workout 3-5 days a week, and I usually do interval training. I have not really seen any change in my muscle tone, and I have been doing this for a few months now.

What should I be doing to get a toned body because I can't seem to figure it out? I want to stop feeling so tired as well. What can help me feel less tired and motivated to workout more?

Workout Trouble Shooting Questions
by: Monica

Hi Alison

I’m so excited that you posted this question. Believe it or not it’s a very common problem (reasons vary from person to person). Before I answer it can you tell me what you mean by interval training? Do you mean cardio with intervals or do you mean a type of circuit training with lighter weights where you do high reps on an exercise then move on to another body part then another etc. I just want to make sure I have it right so I can post some great suggestions for you.

BTW, don’t feel discouraged! You will feel more energy and start getting results once you start giving your body what it needs.

workout tweaks for toning and energy
by: Allison

I actually follow workout DVDs at home. Some of the ones I do are: Jillian Michaels No More Touble Zones, Jillian Michaels: Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism, Exhale: Core Fusion Body Sculpt, and Shape Bikini Body Camp .

I thought I should also mention I am only 23. I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not. I also use 5 lb weights to do the workouts, and I find I can't get through the entire thing on Core Fusion and Jillian Michaels with that amount of weight.

I also wanted to mention I am taking birth control pills, and I read a study that showed women on birth control pills hardly changed their muscle tone when doing the same workout as women who did not take it. Could this be making a difference, and if so are there certain pills that I can take that won't affect my workout results?

Thank you for your help.

Workout fixes that tone your body fast
by: Monica

Hey Allison

Thanks for sharing more details about your workouts and toning challenges. One of the biggest problems when your fitness goal has nothing to do with weightloss is finding workouts that will boost lean muscle mass and burn off excess bodyfat at the same time.

You can only achieve the lean toned look if there is lean muscle underneath the flab and unless you burn off excess fat (the pill and age are not factors here).

A lot of women think that toning means high reps light weights and lots of cardio but this will get you nowhere. The key is to mix both moderate to heavy weight training that builds lean muscle and promotes fat burning hormones with the more cardio endurance workouts.

Here's what Jillian says about her workouts, "One of my trainers beats the crap out of me. We do everything from explosive kettlebell to hoisting 100-pound punching bags over my head to running up stairs with 100 pounds over my head two at a time."

Here's a very quick solution for you. Try this schedule for the next 3 weeks:

Day 1 Leg Toning Exercises Workout
day 2 Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism
Day 3 Arm Toning Exercises Workout
Day 4 Banish Fat Boost Metabolism
Day 5 Leg Toning Exercises Workout
Day 6 Exhale: Core Fusion - Pilates Plus

**As you can see below I am rowing a 25 lb dumbbell and 1. I do not look huge 2. My legs and arms are getting very toned. 3. I'm nearly 5'4 and weigh 118 lb right now (not sure about bodyfat at this point). Moderately heavy weights won't bulk you up (in case you were afraid of that). When you head over to the leg toning exercises workout you will notice I'm using a 6 lb med. ball and 7 lb weight. By week 3 I had increased to two 15 lb dumbbells.

All this should make a huge difference. Be sure to keep us posted on your progress : )

Toning diet fixes

I ran out of room on my last post but wanted to add that eating a clean diet is key to looking toned and increasing energy.

Follow the top 10 healthy diet tips outlined by Carb Rotation expert Jayson Hunter. This combined with your new workout schedule will make a HUGE difference in just 3 short weeks.

My guess is you will start to see a difference in under a week. If you like the result then check out my Fatloss Toning Workout Plan. It's 6 weeks of kickbutt workouts that burn fat, tone your entire body, and boost energy and fitness levels like you wouldn't believe. I start week 5 tomorrow.
