Best Boot Camp Exercises - Mountain Climbers

by Monica

Mountain climbers are one of the best boot camp exercises ever. They boost endurance, strengthen your entire back, shoulders, and abs all while burning tons of fat and calories and improving endurance.

Like many of the exercises here on the site there are many different variations. Some are better for beginners with poor endurance, weak abs, and low back pain. Other versions are for the more intermediate and advanced exerciser looking to take their core and cardio workouts to the next level. Some are only for the most advanced athletes out there.

Check out all the different mountain climbers below then get started with the one that is right for you. As you become more fit you can then progress to more challenging versions of this killer bootcamp exercise.

TRX Mountain Climbers
by: Monica

Mike Roulston of Mode Athletics shows you how to perform TRX mountain climbers.

This version of the mountain climber is very fun and very simple to do but it's also incredibly challenging especially if you do it from the pushup plank position.

If you are a beginners it's better to try this from the forearm plank position for a few weeks. Once you build some core and shoulder stability and ab strength then progress it to the version Mike is doing below.

Valslide Gliding Disc Mountain Climbers
by: Monica

In my opinion valslide gliding disc mountain climbers are probably one of the toughest boot camp exercises around. They're so hard that even my fittest client struggles with them and all the people who think they're hardcore can rarely do them for more than 10-15 seconds at a time.

The reason they are so challenging is they force your legs to go back and forth and prevent cheating. You can't glide the disc back and forth easily if you're taking knees out to the sides, sticking the butt in the air, using the upper back to pull. Doing any of that actually makes the exercise harder. So you can say that this version of the mountain climber is virtually cheat proof.

It also allows you to move faster which causes your heart rate to shoot through the roof. I happen to love this version of mountain climbers!! It's a very intense ab and cardio interval workout and is a great fatloss exercise for busy days that require a quick effective workout.

Stability Ball Mountain Climbers
by: Monica

Fatloss workout expert Craig Ballantyne of Turbulence Training shows you how to perform stability ball mountain climbers, another one of my favorite boot camp exercises that most of my clients love to hate!

Try it and you'll soon find out why they hate it so much. Like the valslide gliding disc mountain climbers this version eliminates cheating all together.

Try cheating and you'll either land on your knees, your face, or your butt.

Great for people who really want to challenge themselves but are not quite ready to move into TRX, gliding disc, or valslide territory.

BTW, this is exactly what Turbulence Training ab workouts from CB's workout program are like, short, intense, and effective!
